If you like apple pie, then you’re going to love mango pie! Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and this year’s dessert table is getting a brand new look. Don’t worry, we’re not advising you to do anything drastic—you can still bring pumpkin and pecan pies to the festivities as we don’t want your guests to miss out—but instead of baking the same ole apple pie for the twenty-ninth year in a row, this time we’re going to surprise everyone with something special. Spiced with warm fall flavors, and topped with a golden lattice crust—with this post we declare that pie season has officially begun!

Tomorrow is the first day of summer, and we are diving right in. In less than 48 hours, we’ll be sailing on crystal clear waters 3500 miles from Los Angeles, sipping on dark and stormys, passion coladas, and soaking up Caribbean sunshine in the tropical British Virgin Islands. Ryan’s parents are experienced sailors, and every few years, they invite the family to explore the seas in a 45-foot catamaran that will be our floating home for the week. Stocked with a full kitchen complete with an oven and stove, the eight of us will be cruising in the water—with laughing gulls tagging along, waiting for our nieces Stella and Lucia, who will throw them a treat. With four bedrooms, four bathrooms, and a sound system which will have Bob Marley and Harry Belafonte on repeat, our crew will be adventuring around the neighboring islands that make up this picture-perfect region—sampling fresh local fruit, snorkeling in 80-degree waters teeming with coral reefs and rainbow-colored fish, and enjoying some much-needed relaxation after this past year and a half of writing the cookbook! But before we embark, we’d like to leave you with a brand new recipe and a refreshing drink to go with it.

kauai recap: a week in paradise

Every time we visit Kauai, we seriously consider moving there. Don’t get us wrong, we love our house and garden here in Eagle Rock, but there’s something enchanting about the idea of living in the tropics—just steps away from the beach, with ocean breezes blowing through our hair as we sip coconuts, eat fresh pineapples, and watch the waves all day. We’ve been home for just over a week and already dreaming about our next trip.

strawberry waffles with balsamic-roasted strawberries

strawberry waffles with balsamic-roasted strawberries

Exactly one year from now, we are throwing a big party. It’s going to be great! Everyone will be invited, and we hope you can come. This week we welcomed some new members to the family: two adorable haas avocado trees—which replaced the feeble kumquat tree that hadn’t grown a single inch in the two years since we planted it. If the weather cooperates, next Cinco de Mayo we’ll be blasting salsa music, sipping margaritas, and mixing guacamole on the front porch, celebrating the first harvest of one of our favorite fruits. Until then, we’ll keep wiping our tears each time we have to fork over five dollars to buy one avocado at the store. Thankfully, there are more inexpensive ways to commemorate spring, and strawberries are certainly a sprightly source of sweet stimulus. And this super-simple breakfast is here to provide just that! Three cheers to spring and strawberries—and to future avocados and outdoor fiestas!

gingerbread hot chocolate

We must be dreaming. We are sitting here sipping hibiscus margaritas—a tangy and refreshing cocktail from one of our favorite bloggers, Christine Carlson—and are overwhelmed with excitement. In just a few days, we are taking a road trip with Christine up to Napa Valley to spend the week with a talented group of food bloggers from all over the United States and Canada (links below), hosted by the brilliant Teri Turner of No Crumbs Left. Aside from enjoying massive amounts of locally-made wine, we will be cooking together, collaborating on recipes, sampling Napa’s award-winning restaurants, visiting picturesque wineries, and attending a lecture by renowned photographer George Lange. Our adventures will be well-documented on our Instagram story, so join us as we eat and drink allll the wine in Napa. But before we head north, we want to leave you with a sweet and comforting treat to keep you warm and cozy all season long. Meet your new winter remedy, and welcome gingerbread hot chocolate to your life.
