We’ve all been there before. You have an early morning, you probably shouldn’t have said yes to that third cocktail last night, you have barely any time to get ready before rushing out the door, you’re hungry but there’s no time to whip up our winter shakshuka (although you could have pulled it off if you hadn’t hit that snooze button 6 times), and you need something nutritious that will give you the energy to last until lunchtime. kauai recap: a week in paradise

the breathtaking na pali coastline, from the kalalau trail

This post was created in partnership with The Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas. All opinions are our own.

Every time we visit Kauai, we seriously consider moving there. Don’t get us wrong, we love our house and garden here in Eagle Rock, but there’s something enchanting about the idea of living in the tropics—just steps away from the beach, with ocean breezes blowing through our hair as we sip coconuts, eat fresh pineapples, and watch the waves all day. Gluten-free diets are becoming more popular every day. We have friends and family members who cannot eat wheat, so it is our job to make sure our site has a variety of options for everyone, no matter what their restrictions are. Your gluten-free dinner guests will love you forever when they see you place hearty bowls of butternut squash risotto on the table, topped with crispy sage. Feeling spicy? Watch their eyes light up as a beautiful roasted tandoori cauliflower emerges steaming and fragrant from the oven. Whatever you decide, make sure to leave room for dessert, because you will absolutely not want to miss this dreamy coconut cream and raspberry tart from Alanna Taylor-Tobin’s gorgeous new cookbook, Alternative Baker. Filled with over 100 dessert ideas featuring gluten-free flours and truly stunning photography, it deserves a spot on every kitchen bookshelf and makes a perfect present for the holidays.

Happy Labor Day everyone! Today we are heading to a barbecue and enjoying these glorious cooler temperatures that have arrived in southern California just in time for the holiday weekend. But before we go, we had to share a delicious tropical cocktail for all your last-minute party-planning needs, a refreshing twist on the piña colada. It is incredibly easy to make and literally takes just thirty seconds in the blender. Here, light rum is mixed with cream of coconut, pineapple juice, passion fruit puree, freshly squeezed lime juice, and blended with ice to make a creamy and refreshing beverage inspired by the Puerto Rican classic. Garnished with a strawberry, a slice of pineapple, and a colorful paper umbrella, the only labor you’ll need to do today is print out this recipe and plug in your blender!

Is everyone ready? Okay, cue the music. Lights. Camera. Aaand action! Good morning ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to the second installment of the Husbands That Cook Summer Cocktail series starring your hosts, Adam and Ryan. Every Friday at 10am PST for the next few weeks, we will be taking over the feedfeed’s snapchat and showing you how to make some of our favorite summer drinks. On last week’s exciting episode we traveled to tropical paradise and made these refreshing blackberry vanilla tequila mojitos filled with fresh blackberries, cool mint leaves and smooth tequila. For today’s show, we have something very special planned: the Island Sunrise, a riff on a classic Caribbean cocktail called a Painkiller. So let’s pack our bags, bring some light clothing, and set a course for the islands, where abundant sunshine and palm trees await us.
