You spoke and we listened! Four days ago we proposed a question on Instagram, asking for recipe requests for our weekly Friday Live show. This week marks our 23rd episode, and we thought it would be fun to see what our audience wanted to watch us make! Suggestions came in from literally around the world, and one idea in particular caught our attention. Over five thousand miles away, across the Atlantic Ocean in the city of Edinburgh, Scotland lives a friend of ours named Ryan-Andrew Brown. In addition to attending medical school and caring for patients in hospitals, somehow he also finds time to post original recipes on his beautifully-photographed cooking blog. When he proposed that we make something distinctly American—like a cobbler—we immediately knew what we had to do.
a surprise in Las Vegas
This post was created in partnership with Lucky Dragon. All opinions are our own.
What happens in Vegas… stays on our blog. Last weekend, we took an impromptu road trip from Los Angeles to the Silver State to surprise Adam’s grandparents, Dan and Lee, who are 95 and 93 years old respectively. Dan was one of the original producers of the musical Man of La Mancha back in the 1960’s, but hasn’t seen the play in over fifty years. Two weeks ago, when he mentioned to us over the phone that they were going to see a production in a park near their house, we could tell how much this performance meant to him, and we knew we had to be there. To make it even more special, we decided to keep our trip a secret, and make this a surprise that he would always remember.

Guess what we just did? If you guessed purchased plane tickets to Kauai, you are correct! This October we will be flying 2,627 miles over the Pacific Ocean to relax in the sun and explore one of our favorite places on earth. We were invited by The Westin Princeville to stay at their resort and host a live cooking show from the spacious kitchenettes in their villas. Every Friday at noon for the past four months, we have been going live on Instagram, making a new recipe from our kitchen—although technically, we film it in our living room since that has the best lighting—and we can’t tell you how excited we are to host an episode from Hawaii (we just love how that sounds)! With coconut palms and ocean views as our backdrop, we hope you’ll join us on October 20th at 12pm PST as we whip up something deliciously tropical and share stories of our Kauai adventures on a special episode live from the North Shore.

Can someone please transport us back to Japan? We fell in love with the country five years ago when we visited for the first time. It was the height of summer, and even though it was incredibly hot and humid, we didn’t let the weather slow us down. Every day we would walk for miles—never taking a cab—exploring the immaculate cities of Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, Hiroshima, and Miyajima. We have never felt so welcomed in any new place before, and the people were warm, polite, and always helpful. On several occasions as we stood on the sidewalk looking at our map, strangers approached us and not only asked if we needed assistance, but then walked with us for several blocks to make sure we arrived at the correct destination. Toto, I don’t think we’re in Los Angeles anymore.
lucia’s vegan lemon waffles
Is there a word for a meat-eating vegan? This describes our nine-year-old niece Lucia, who can eat anything except for eggs and dairy. Last week she took her first solo flight from Portland, Oregon to visit her favorite uncles, and we packed in four days of fun activities from the moment she stepped off the plane. Cooking pancake breakfasts together, riding every rollercoaster at Disneyland, hand-feeding tropical birds at the Long Beach aquarium, and watching the sunset (with cotton candy) from the Santa Monica Pier—we let her choose the itinerary, and had an unforgettable time. But the best part was having Lucia join us on Instagram Live last Friday for our most adorable episode yet! In case you missed it, the full show is now on our YouTube page and we have lots more coming soon, so be sure to subscribe so you don’t miss any upcoming videos.
